One of the things I like to do is help our readers answer some tough questions. Every day, I get several inquiries that cover a myriad of options.
The other day, I got one from a gentleman named John. He had what I thought was a simple question about the need for power-steering coolers. The reason I chose to speak someone at Borgeson for my research? Easy, this company has been building power-steering-system components for decades. The benefits of a power-steering cooler on a race car are easily realized. But, did you know your street cruiser can also see the benefits of installing a cooler? I directed the question to Jeff Grantmeyer, sales manager at Borgeson, and to my surprise, there really is no simple answer.
We have had customers tell us they have seen fluid temperatures reduced by as much as 75 to 80 degrees by adding a power-steering cooler. Mounting the cooler inappropriately can severely hinder its performance. Always make sure the cooler is not touching anything, as vibration can wear a hole in the cooler. Also, better airflow can occur if there is space between the cooler and the radiator. The main benefit every enthusiast can take from that is, while a cooler might not be necessary for the typical Saturday-evening cruiser, the lowering of the fluid temps in the system a cooler can deliver, will inevitably reduce wear and tear on the pump and gearbox.
Of course, you also have the underlying benefit of a radiator to dissipate a lot of heat. However, if by adding a cooler to his car, which sounds like it will see a lot of cruising miles, the addition of the cooler will afford other benefits like the longevity of parts and fluid, which means less downtime for repairs. That in itself sounds like a big reason why adding a cooler to the steering system can be a big benefit. That prevents damage to the other parts of the power steering system. The cooler is connected by hoses to the power steering pump and the power steering fluid reservoir. The cooler is mounted to the radiator support where air can flow over it through the grille. The power steering cooler works more or less like a radiator.
The power steering fluid gets heated up as it is pressurized and gets pumped back and forth from the steering rack or box. When the fluid returns to the reservoir, it passes through the cooler. The hot fluid gives off its heat to the tubes and fins of the cooler, just like the coolant does in the radiator.
The cooler fins radiate the heat away as cool air is passed over it. Not all cars come with a power steering cooler. They are commonly found on trucks and SUVs whose power steering systems get worked extra hard in towing or off-road situations. A power steering cooler can fail in the same ways that a radiator can. It might become damaged, say in a fender bender, and start to leak.
Without enough fluid, the power steering assist might feel weak, making it hard to steer your vehicle. Damaged cooler fins will make the cooler less efficient at cooling. Hot fluid will put additional strain on the power steering pump which might cause the pump to make a whining noise. The cooler can also become clogged with old fluid or foreign material that has made its way into the reservoir. A clogged cooler will be worse at cooling and will impede the flow of fluid.
That will put strain on the pump and make your power steering weak. One way to test that the cooler is the source of your power steering problems is to try bypassing it. Connect the inlet and outlet hoses for the pump to each other. If your power steering symptoms go away, then you know it was the cooler that was causing them.
Replacing the power steering cooler is pretty straightforward. You will want to drain the system of fluid before you begin. Then you can disconnect the cooler hoses and unbolt the cooler from the radiator support. Then, bolt on the new one and connect it. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way from one side to the other and back again repeatedly to circulate fluid. Then check the fluid level again, and refill as necessary.

The typical Ford power steering "cooler" loops on the front crossmember is in rough shape. I'd also like to mount my electric lift pump right where that cooler is. I put a new radiator in this thing, and it has a trans cooler that won't be used with this manual, so what is the feasibility of using that internal cooler for the power steering?

On Pro Touring cars that have taken up the challenge of the increasingly popular track days and tight-turn autocross events, these competitions also put lots of heat into power steering systems. Twice we've seen Saginaw GM power steering pump towers actually fall off due to the deadly combination of killer heat and vibration at Pro Touring events.
So if heat is the big culprit, how 'bout trimming those temps with an inexpensive power steering cooler? We were cruising the boneyard awhile back when we noticed a power steering cooler languishing on a fullsize Ford that looked like it would work on our road racer Chevelle.
We've seen lots of factory heat sinks power steering cooler on taxis and police cruisers, so those cars would make great ground zero starting places. The cooler is different because instead of resorting to the typical air-to-oil cooler, GM engineers created a more efficient design using engine coolant.
Using a large, aluminum housing placed in the upper radiator hose, the heat exchanger routes engine coolant around cooling tubes inside the housing to manage the power steering fluid temperature. We talked with Tom Lee of Lee Manufacturing who builds racing power steering boxes, and pumps and he prefers the fluid temperature at degrees F, but he also says anything below degrees F is acceptable.
What will kill pumps is temperatures exceeding degrees F. Another idea that helps control temperature is to replace the late-model, plastic power steering pump reservoirs with a remote reservoir. Remote reservoirs help reduce heat by reducing the aeration in the oil.
We've also considered the idea of converting engine radiator automatic transmission cooler fittings to cool the power steering fluid. Lee has lots of experience with coolers and claims that because of the severe pressure fluctuations in a power steering system the old tube-and-fin coolers do a much better job of controlling inherent vibrations compared with the flat, segmented coolers. Lee says the segmented units are more thermally efficient but tend to be susceptible to vibration.
He says that return side pressures are usually around psi, but when the system is cold, it can spike to more than psi for a few moments. As far as fluid is concerned, he prefers using a mineral-based oil.
